Do not let my heart be drawn to what is evil so that I take part in wicked deeds along with those who are evildoers; do not let me eat their delicacies. (Psalm 141:4 NIV)
Since we spend so much time at work we are likely to learn the interests and what motivates our coworkers. It is common for people to share details, discuss their habits and feelings in familiar settings. As Christians we should be careful to resist the attraction of conversations or replicating behavior which does not reflect Christ. An example of this would be groups who spend their lunch hour in deep and bitter conversation about workplace problems. There is no positive intent in the discussion, but rather, an ongoing chronicle of negative situations and the people associated with them. You might be inclined to agree with some of the comments. However, if there is clearly nothing beneficial being discussed, such as solutions or strategies, it is best to avoid those conversations.
Prayer-Lord, you know I am tempted to join conversations about _____________________. I share the frustrations of my coworkers. I pray that you will help me to focus on your word and your expectations for me to demonstrate integrity. I also pray for my workplace, both the people and situation, that you would bring clarity and peace. In Jesus’ name. Amen
