What Are You Doing For Lunch?

Do not let my heart be drawn to what is evil so that I take part in wicked deeds along with those who are evildoers; do not let me eat their delicacies. (Psalm 141:4 NIV) Since we spend so much time at work we are likely to learn the interests and what motivates our coworkers. It is common for people to share details, discuss their habits and feelings in familiar settings. As Christians we should be careful to resist the attraction of conversations or replicating behavior which does not reflect Christ. An example of this would be groups who spend their lunch hour in deep and bitter conversation about workplace problems. There is no positive intent in the discussion, but rather, an ongoing chronicle of negative situations and the people associated with them. You might be inclined to agree with some of the comments. However, if there is clearly nothing beneficial being discussed, such as solutions or strategies, it is best to avoid those conversations.   Prayer-Lord, you know I am tempted to join conversations about _____________________. I share the frustrations of my coworkers. I pray that you will help me to focus on your word and your expectations for me to demonstrate integrity. I also pray for my workplace, both the people and situation, that you would bring clarity and peace. In Jesus’ name. Amen

The Secret to My Success

The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon; planted in the house of the Lord, they will flourish in the courts of our God. (Psalm 92:12-13 NIV) When our workplace conduct is pleasing to God we will thrive and grow. We are members of the body of Christ at all times, even when we are not at church. When we interact with others, make decisions and complete tasks, our goal should be do everything in excellence. Even though our occupation may be secular and may have absolutely nothing to do with faith, we should still execute our responsibilities in a way that shows reverence to Christ. As a result, our work will be executed superbly and we will grow spiritually. Our employers have likely outlined the procedures and standards of our work. There may specific competencies we must master in order to realize job advancement. Likewise, God uses our secular employment to develop spiritual competencies so that we can grow in His kingdom and for His purposes.   Prayer-Father, you know my work and the challenges I face. I want to perform at my highest level and I want to please you as well. Lord, help me with the projects and tasks I must complete so that I reflect your image in my workplace. Amen

Are you overwhelmed?

Be merciful to me, Lord, for I am in distress; my eyes grow weak with sorrow, my soul and body with grief. (Psalm 31:9 NIV) Stress at work can be so overwhelming at times that we need to find some relief or an outlet. People find relief in constructive activities like exercise or hobbies. We know that exercise is beneficial for the body and is highly recommended as a stress reliever. Others turn to inappropriate outlets such as alcohol, drugs or over indulgence in food and we know the damage this behavior causes to our bodies and our lives over all. When we are in distress we should make wise decisions to manage our behavior. We must take proper care of our bodies. We should also take time to ask God for his presence and peace in our workplace when we feel this way. At times like this, it’s appropriate to take a brief retreat to someplace private to pray and share with God. Pour out your heart to him. Explain in your own words why you are stressed. This will bring you closer to Him and help you to remember that he is present and helping with the burdens you are carrying at work. His loving presence will soothe you. Prayer-Father I am so stressed right now because _________________________________. God I have been feeling overwhelmed. I need your love and comfort and I need to know that you are here with me. Please reveal your presence so I can [...]

Competition and Career Development

My times are in your hands; deliver me from the hands of my enemies, from those who pursue me. Let your face shine on your servant; save me in your unfailing love. (Psalm 31:15-16 NIV) Our future and our career path are in the hands of God. We should remind ourselves of this, especially when we feel the pressure of competition or adversarial work relationships. Perhaps you work in a competitive sales environment; a position which demonstrates strong mental or physical agility or perhaps you are competing for a promotion.  You may believe you are capable of executing the responsibilities of the role better than your competition and you are worthy of recognition. The other candidates certainly feel the same as you, resulting in tension and unwanted stress. The heavenly father has already decided who will be promoted. As a child of God, remember that He loves you and will place you in the role which suits you and helps you to become the person he wants you to become.  Relinquish your will to Him. Trust that he will cover and fortify you. Your career will develop as you develop into spiritually.   Prayer-Father, I know you sit high and look low. Your perspective is greater than mine. You are alpha and omega. You know the beginning and the end. I trust you to guide me and to promote me to the right position when I am ready. Lord, please show me where I need to change and improve so [...]
